Young Army Sergeant Turns Cancer Battle into Fundraising Triumph

When Joe was diagnosed with Stage 2 bowel cancer at just 30 years old, life suddenly shifted into unfamiliar territory. Preparing to welcome his first child should have been a time of excitement, but instead Joe found himself facing months of treatment, uncertainty and physical exhaustion.

In early 2024, Joe began four months of intensive chemotherapy at George Eliot Hospital’s Dorothea Ward, attending weekly appointments that would test both his body and mindset. Alongside the gruelling side effects of treatment, Joe says it was the compassion and reassurance of staff that helped him cope day to day.

“The team on Dorothea Ward supported me through everything,” Joe said. “They didn’t just treat the cancer — they supported me as a person when things felt overwhelming.”

By 2025, Joe reached a major milestone: his first year in remission. Determined to regain normality, he returned to active service as a Sergeant in the British Army — something he credits to the care and encouragement he received throughout his treatment.

To show his gratitude, Joe took on an Ultramarathon, the Pumpkin Plod challenge at Ferry Meadows, Nene Park in Peterborough on 26 October 2025. Covering an incredible 32.68 miles in just 5 hours and 34 minutes, Joe raised an outstanding £4,358.64 for George Eliot Hospital Charity.

“It was tough going,” Joe said, “but I was proud to push myself and complete the distance.”

The funds raised will directly support cancer services at George Eliot Hospital, helping to enhance the care for future patients.

Fundraising Coordinator Maria Holmes-Keeling praised Joe’s determination, saying:
“Joe’s commitment is inspiring. Hearing his story and seeing what he has achieved — now balancing army life and being a dad of two — is truly remarkable.”

George Eliot Hospital Charity is proud to support Joe as he continues to raise awareness for bowel cancer. Recognising symptoms early can save lives https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bowel-cancer/symptoms/.
