Patients, visitors, staff and volunteers at George Eliot Hospital are set to benefit from 25 brand-new wheelchairs funded by George Eliot Hospital Charity thanks to the incredible generosity of local supporters.
The charity has invested in 25 additional wheelchairs to make it easier, safer and more comfortable for patients to move around the hospital. Ten wheelchairs will be available at the hospital’s main entrance, where they will be managed by the Voluntary Services team and volunteers, while a further 15 will support the portering team across the hospital.
The wheelchairs will also be equipped with accessories where required, including oxygen cylinder holders, elevated leg rests and anti-static castors. In addition, each wheelchair will be fitted with GPS tracking technology, helping staff manage the equipment more effectively.
This charitable investment goes beyond the NHS’s core provision and demonstrates how donations from the local community help create a more compassionate and welcoming experience for everyone who visits George Eliot Hospital.
For patients, having improved access to a wheelchair means greater comfort, dignity and safety, reducing the risk of falls while helping them reach appointments and wards without unnecessary stress. Families and visitors will also benefit from the reassurance of knowing their loved ones can be transported safely and comfortably around the hospital.
The additional wheelchairs will also make a significant difference to staff and volunteers. Portering and clinical teams will spend less time searching for equipment, allowing them to focus more on delivering patient care, while volunteers at the hospital entrance will be able to offer faster assistance to those who need it, creating a warm and supportive first impression for patients and visitors.
The investment will also improve patient flow throughout the hospital by helping patients arrive at clinics, imaging departments and treatment areas more efficiently, supporting smoother running services and reducing delays.
