George Eliot Hospital Charity has received a generous £1,000 donation from Unison to support patients on Milby Ward at George Eliot Hospital. The funds have been used to purchase a wide range of sensory and support equipment designed to improve the daily experience of patients, particularly those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The donation has provided many helpful items including a mobile DVD player with a selection of DVDs, puzzles and games, a hairdryer, headphones, a tea set, specially adapted cutlery, cups and plate holders, and even a mini freezer to name just a few. These resources are more than just everyday objects – they provide vital support to patients and enhance their wellbeing. The doll is given to patients with dementia as they spend a lot of time believing they are an age when their children are young and it has been evidenced that providing care for young children can be reassuring and provides them with something to focus on whilst in an unfamiliar environment.
For people with Alzheimer’s, simple activities such as watching a familiar film, listening to music, or enjoying a cup of tea in a homely setting can bring reassurance and reduce anxiety. Games and puzzles encourage engagement and help to stimulate memory, while adapted cutlery and tableware enable patients to eat with greater independence and dignity. Even small touches like being able to have their hair styled with the new hairdryer help patients to feel more like themselves and promote a sense of normality during their hospital stay.
Cristina Stevens, Ward Manager on Milby Ward, said:
“We’re so grateful for this donation. These items may seem small, but they make a real difference to our patients by supporting dignity, comfort and independence. They bring familiar routines and moments of joy into the ward, which is so important for people living with dementia and their families.”
Lesley Naylor, Branch Secretary from Unison, explained why the ward was chosen:
“We wanted our donation to make a direct impact on patients, and Milby Ward was the perfect choice. The staff do an amazing job caring for people with complex needs, and we know these items will help to bring comfort, independence and enjoyment to those receiving care.”
George Eliot Hospital Charity continues to fund projects and initiatives that improve the wellbeing and experience of patients across the hospital, ensuring that every donation makes a lasting difference to local people.
