Charity-Funded iPads Transform Patient Experience Across George Eliot Hospital

George Eliot Hospital Charity has funded numerous iPads to support services across the hospital site, helping teams work more efficiently and enhancing patient care. The devices have been distributed across key departments, including four to Theatres, eight to Therapy, four to the Patient Forum and three to Outpatients.

It’s already clear how valuable these iPads are in supporting day-to-day care and improving patient experience.

Supporting the Patient Forum

The four iPads allocated to the Patient Forum have made a significant impact, replacing paper-based surveys with faster, more responsive digital feedback tools.

Using the devices, the Forum has carried out patient experience surveys, including monitoring outpatient pharmacy waiting times. This has directly led to improvements such as enhanced to rearranging seating area, the re-introduction of handheld buzzers to alert patients when medication is ready, and clearer signage.

The iPads have also enabled conversations with patients in additional bed spaces, resulting in recommendations to senior leaders that have helped elevate standards of privacy, dignity and overall patient experience. In the Emergency Department, the devices have supported surveys assessing hydration and nutritional needs, aligning with the six-hour standard operating procedure.

Natalie Mills, Chair of the Patient Forum, said: “The iPads have made a tangible difference in helping us deliver our workplan in a more timely and responsive way. They allow us to gather real-time feedback and work in partnership with George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust to enhance patient wellbeing and experience. We are profoundly grateful to George Eliot Hospital Charity for their generosity and commitment to the work we do.”

Enhancing Therapy Services

In Therapy, the eight iPads are supporting both Musculoskeletal (MSK) and Neurology teams. They are used to facilitate translation for patients whose first language is not English, improving communication and ensuring patients fully understand their treatment plans.

The devices are also used during exercise classes, enabling clinicians to demonstrate exercises and document progress. Importantly, they support the collection of patient-reported outcome measures, with patients completing digital questionnaires at the start and end of treatment to track improvements.

Making a Difference Across the Hospital

From Theatres to Outpatients, these iPads are helping staff deliver more responsive, inclusive and patient-centred care.

George Eliot Hospital Charity is proud to fund practical resources like these that make a real difference every day — supporting innovation, improving patient experience and helping staff provide the very best care to our community.
